AI search is now where buyers start

51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, and 69% chose a different vendor than they expected because of what a chatbot surfaced (G2, 2026). Ranking on Google is no longer the whole game. Being named in the answer is.

How AI picks who to name

  1. It breaks the question apart. One question becomes many smaller ones, everything a full answer needs.
  2. It pulls passages, not pages. It scores short passages from across the web for how cleanly they answer. A page that is not #1 can still be used if one section answers clearly.
  3. It checks who to trust. Authority weighs heavily. In Ahrefs’ study of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages, those that also rank in Google came mostly from high-authority sites (Ahrefs).
  4. It writes the answer and names its sources.

What decides whether you are named

  • It can understand you.Structured data and a consistent identity across the web.
  • It can trust you.Real authors, real credentials, reviews and a verifiable business. This is E-E-A-T.
  • Your content is worth citing.Original facts and first-hand experience. Adding real statistics and credible sources raised AI citation rates by 30 to 40% in the Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO study (SIGKDD 2024).

SEO still matters

AI visibility is built on SEO, not instead of it. Pages cited in Google’s AI Overviews increasingly already rank on their own (BrightEdge). And about 58% of US Google searches end with no click at all (SparkToro). The answer itself is the new front page.
